Behind the music

Whether on stage or in the studio, JJ’s goal remains the same: to create music that resonates emotionally, inspires others, and pushes sonic boundaries.

Music has always been woven into JJ’s life. He grew up in a household where The Beatles, Enanitos Verdes, and Michael Jackson were always playing, and from an early age, he was immersed in a wide range of sounds.

He began with classical training on the cello, but everything changed when he picked up the guitar. He fell in love with rock and blues, and that passion quickly led to jamming and gigging with family and friends.

Even early on, JJ was drawn not just to playing music but to understanding how it all worked. He was the one setting up PA systems for school concerts, experimenting with electric cello and pedals, and eventually exploring recording and production.

The pandemic provided the time and space to dive deeper in his engineering knowledge. He taught himself how to record and mix, realizing that a DAW could be just as expressive as any instrument. He spent hours dissecting his favorite records and figuring out how to incorporate those techniques into his own projects.

That curiosity and love for sound manipulation led him to Berklee, where he is currently studying Music Production and Engineering. He was recently awarded the MPE Engineering Scholar Award.

Currently enrolled in the Professional Music/ Music Production and Engineering double major along with the Acoustics and Electronics minor GPA: 3.8

Musical Notation and Theory, Individual Guitar Study, Ensemble. Studying 5 hours per week and taking classes with Berklee Alumni using the Berklee curriculum. Ensemble performances, private instruction exams, and harmony/ear training exams at the end of the semester

  • Performs as a guitarist, bassist, cellist, and vocalist in various ensembles and venues of different sizes, both on and off campus.

  • Adapts to diverse musical settings, ranging from small acoustic sets to large-scale productions.

  • Plays across multiple genres, including indie rock, funk, jazz fusion, grunge, Latin pop and rock, salsa, folk, Brazilian, chamber music, and musical theatre.

  • Collaborates with different musicians and ensembles, showcasing versatility in both live and studio settings.

Studio and Producing Experience

  • Operates stage setup and breakdown for Berklee venues, including the Berklee Performance Center.

  • Configures and test backlines, ensuring all instruments and equipment are performance-ready.

  • Manages front-of-house sound and livestream mixing for live events.

  • Oversees stage operations, coordinating performers and crew for smooth transitions.

  • Supports high-profile performances, working on events featuring artists such as André 3000, Sammy Rae, Ken Yates, and Georgia Parker.

  • Produces, engineers, and assists in recording sessions both on and off campus.

  • Operates and troubleshoots professional studio equipment, including the API Legacy Plus and Sound Workshop Series 34 consoles.

  • Work with various controllers, interfaces, outboard gear, and plugins for high-quality audio production.

  • Produced and released a single for Colombian singer-songwriter Eleanor.

  • Currently producing and engineering an album for American singer-songwriter Liz Bounds.
